PERSONAL
STATEMENT
|
| |
I graduated from Stanford University in 2000 with a Masters of Science
degree in Environmental Engineering and in 1998 with a Bachelors
of Science degree in 1998. I also minored in History with a focus
of Colonial History. In the long run, I would like to return to my
reservation to help design solutions to environmental problems on
the Navajo Reservation. I also would like to teach at the college-level
and continue working on research topics.

Karletta
Chief
|
Karletta Chief served as Miss Navajo Nation, graduated from Stanford University,
and is pursuing a PhD at the University of Arizona. She has built her foundation
on the teachings of the hogan and the circle of life. The aspects of the
octagon foundation begin with family and clan. It is followed by spirituality
and values, culture and language, history, repsecting your elders, health,
education, and being a role model for youth.

|
| I
am Navajo originally from Black Mesa, Arizona, which is in the Four
Corners Region. I am of the "Bitterwater People" and born
for "Near-the-Water People." My maternal grandfather is of
the "Red-House People" and my paternal grandfather is of
the "Red-Running-into-the-Water People." This is how I identify
myself as a Navajo woman.
